Hi Weston Football Families – We are excited to announce that, beginning in 2019, Weston youth football has joined Westport’s program through the Westport PAL. Last year (fall 2018), we combined on an ad-hoc basis by grade. Going forward, the programs will be fully integrated under the Westport banner, and Weston will have representation on the Westport PAL Board and some coaching staffs.

This combination across all grade levels provides long-term stability and gives our kids an opportunity to play football in a competitive program, puts their development first, and, importantly, gives them the best opportunity to have fun playing football. There are now more football offerings available for our kids, including house flag football through 8th grade, as well as the new modified travel flag football for 3rd & 4th graders. We are very excited to start this next chapter of football in Weston.

Please see the below message with information on program offerings. You will be asked to register and sign up through Westport PAL’s website.  Cheer details are being finalized now and will be communicated shortly.

Hi Football Fans – 2019 Westport PAL Football Registration is now open at:

http://westportpal.org/Page.asp?n=9896&org=PLATINUM.WESTPORTPAL.ORG

In response to parent feedback and league evaluations, in addition to our 5th - 8th grade tackle football program, Westport PAL Football is introducing a new Travel Flag football option this Fall for 3rd and 4th grade to augment our House Flag football.  Our Fall PAL Football lineup for this Fall will be as follows:

Modified Travel Flag FootballWestport PAL Football and the Fairfield County Football League (FCFL) are excited to announce a Travel Flag Football league for 3rd and 4th graders.  Travel Flag Football will use Flag football rules and wear full equipment; helmets, shoulder pads, football pants and game jerseys. (Tackling is not allowed, flags are pulled to down ball carriers).  Teams will compete against other FCFL town teams with modified field size and FCFL referees.

Travel Flag Football will be for players interested in a more competitive football experience where coaches will be teaching safe football fundamentals and key skills such as throwing, catching, ball carrying and blocking techniques. Certified coaches will conduct practices in accordance with PAL and Staples Football curriculum and fundamentals. PAL may cap registration at 2 teams per grade and hold evaluations to select rosters. Teams will practice twice per week with a game on the weekends. (PAL will make efforts to avoid conflicts with travel soccer).Note: there will be no Tackle football option for 3rd and 4th graders.

PAL Tackle FootballWestport PAL Football and the Fairfield County Football League will continue to offer our traditional tackle football program for 5th-8th graders in the 2019 season.  Pre-season will begin on Monday, August 19th this year, continuing with 2 weeks of pre-season of practices with the FCFL Jamboree taking place on the weekend of August 31st/September 1st, the regular season running 8 weeks with single elimination playoffs to follow.   Teams will practice 3 days per week with a game on the weekend.

In the past, Tackle Football had an informal policy for teams to hold positional and skill evaluations during the pre-season so parents and players understand where the player falls on a positional depth chart. This has not always been done, and we have had issues with proper expectations and experiences. For the upcoming season, this policy will be mandated so that we improve the communication and set clearer expectations with our players and parents. Based on that clear communication, we can then have a discussion with parents to discuss the season and recommend the best developmental path for that player.  This will not be a “cut”. Our goal as a program is to have as many players participating in our football program as possible, and that anyone that has interest in playing tackle football gets that opportunity. We also want everyone to have safe, fulfilling experience, and this process will allow us to achieve that goal.

For inquiries, please contact Ben Talbott at (Westport) or Jon Kelson at (Weston).

House Flag FootballOur Flag Football Program is for 1st-8th grade boys and girls.  This NFL based Flag program provides a fun and safe football experience with NFL team jerseys and flag sets that each player can keep and is guided by NFL Flag rules.  Play is divided into 1st/2nd grade, 3rd/4th grade, 5th/6th grade and 7th/8th grade.  PAL Commissioners will attempt to put rosters together based on schools.   Practice will be held once per week with a game on Saturday mornings, and the season will start the weekend of September 7th.  Westport may participate with other towns such as Weston, Wilton and Fairfield.

For inquiries please contact TJ Hegarty at (Westport) or Doug Barshop at (Weston).

Spring/Summer 2019 Program Offerings

7 – on – 7 Grip It & Rip It TournamentA rousing success last year, the Fairfield County Football League will again run a 7-on-7 tournament for rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders, and will mirror the 7–on–7 Grip It & Rip It High School Tournament hosted in New Canaan.  The tournament is scheduled for Sunday, June 9th (rising 6th) and Monday evening, June 10th (rising 7th & 8th), and you must be registered for Tackle football to participate.  There will be practices held by the grade level coaching staffs prior to the tournament, but we will attempt to avoid conflicts with other spring sports and practice attendance is not mandatory to play in the tournament.

Monday Night Lights – This is a football skills camp that will be open to all Westport PAL football players (flag and tackle) from rising 3rd graders through 8th graders.  For players who are new to football, this program will serve as a fun introduction to the game and a chance to develop basic skills while wearing a football helmet and shoulder pads.  For players with experience, this will be an excellent opportunity to hone skills and learn new positions in their gear.  During its inaugural season, this program attracted 125 players!  Sessions will be Monday evenings during the summer, starting on July 1st, with the last session on August 12th, and attending just a few sessions will be both beneficial and cost effective for our families.
